Ice Miller Director of Business and Government Strategies Michael Coleman will Join American Team at Smart Cities Workshop in Egypt

Michael Coleman, partner and director of business and government strategies at Ice Miller and former mayor of Columbus, Ohio, will join the United States team at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Sustainable Smart Cities International Workshop from May 8-11 in Alexandria, Egypt.

The four-day event aims to facilitate an open discussion between U.S., European and Egyptian scientists, architects, urban planners and engineers to tackle challenges and determine best practices for urbanization and smart cities. The international workshop is presented by The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Sustainable Smart Cities Research Center in partnership with Alexandria University and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport.

The workshop brings together global leaders to identify areas for research and international collaboration, create an understanding of sustainable smart cities and examine the role of education in urban sustainability.

Michael is no stranger to discussing urban development and the impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) on cities. He served four terms over 16 years as mayor and chief executive officer of Columbus. He was the longest serving mayor in the city’s history and the longest-serving incumbent African-American mayor among major U.S. cities. During this time, Michael turned his attention to developing a urban development strategy that attracted $7 million in private investment since 2000, transformed downtown Columbus into a business and residential center that procured $1.6 billion in new investments and created more than 2,700 new jobs and led Columbus in earning the distinction of having the fourth best economy in the United States among all major cities, to name a few accomplishments.

Now, Michael is an important speaker on economic developments and Smart Cities. He has spoken at commencement and received honorary degrees from six colleges. At Ice Miller, Michael is a member of the Public Affairs, Government Law and Internet of Things Groups.
