Attorney Spotlight: Paul Bittner Named Best Lawyers® 2017 “Lawyer of the Year” in Columbus in Labor Law – Management

Ice Miller partner Paul Bittner was named Best Lawyers® 2017 “Lawyer of the Year” in Columbus in Labor Law – Management. Paul is vice chair of the Firm's Labor and Employment group. He has been practicing law since 1993 with an emphasis on labor and employment law and has extensive experience representing employers.

We asked Paul: If you could give just one tip to younger attorneys, what would it be?

“Employers seek trusted legal advisors. When you come out of law school, you are so conditioned and trained to look at every single legal issue and provide an academic answer. Employers often do not care about the academics and instead want to understand the practical outcome of the different legal issues involved. Sometimes employers are willing to take risks when making a decision if such risk is best for the business. Sometimes employers want to avoid risk for a variety of reasons, some of which could be financial, but others could be internal and unrelated to the legal analysis. You should speak to your client about the client’s goals related to the matter. Such an understanding is vital to gaining such an understanding of your client’s business, the client’s goals and the best outcomes when providing legal advice. Take the time to understand that not all legal issues get resolved in a classroom setting. In the “real world,” you will provide better service to your client as a trusted legal advisor.”
