Summer Clerk Program

Our summer program highlights the best of what Ice Miller has to offer.

Currently we offer summer clerkships in multiple offices. The program is designed to provide broad exposure to a variety of practice areas. Clerks come away with a good understanding of a "day in the life" of an Ice Miller attorney, and they also gain a sense of how our clients are impacted by the work we do.

We Offer A Rewarding Summer Experience…
  • A competitive weekly stipend
  • Regular social events and activities including Carburation Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, dinner outings, happy hours, sporting events, a retreat, team building activities, and one-of-a-kind gatherings hosted by our partners
  • A lunch "allowance"
  • Guidance and mentoring from our Summer Program Lawyer Advisory Team (SPLAT)

…With Meaningful Work
Our summer clerks are assigned projects from partners and attorneys throughout the summer. While the work product is critical, we also value the development of our clerks, so comprehensive feedback and evaluations of their work is not just the norm, it is the expectation. Our clerks have a unique opportunity to develop direct working relationships with our attorneys, in order to enhance research, writing, and presentation skills. Members of SPLAT plan "out of office" activities so our clerks can see the connection of work and client relationships.

Typical "out of office" opportunities include:
  • Client meetings
  • Depositions
  • Transaction closings
  • Hearings
  • Plant or site visits
Community Involvement Activity
Ice Miller prides itself on the extensive community involvement of our attorneys and staff.

To continue this Ice Miller tradition, each summer clerk class is required to choose an organization and devote an entire day during their clerkship assisting the organization in some meaningful way. The entire summer class works together and handles all of the details involved in the planning. Past clerk classes have:

  • Painted homes in low income neighborhoods
  • Cleaned city parks
  • Worked at a local food bank
  • Painted playground equipment at a rehabilitation center
  • Worked in a domestic violence shelter
  • Assisted with clean up and relief for tornado victims

Our Summer Clerks Are Our Greatest Asset

Traditionally we look to our summer clerk classes to fill our fall associate needs. With that in mind, our summer clerks meet with a member of the Personnel Committee on a weekly basis to chart and track their performance. In addition, we conduct formal evaluations at the middle and end of the clerkship.

Recruiting for the Summer Program
Ice Miller recruits on campus at law schools across the country and at several job fairs. You may also apply here for the summer program.
