Evaluations

At Ice Miller LLP, we have a program by which associates move through the ranks at their own pace. Attorneys are evaluated based on their individual development and progression.  Brand new associates at the Firm are considered Level I associates.  An associate at this level is learning the basic skills required to be a lawyer.

As a Level II associate, the focus is on continuing to develop legal skills, to begin to cultivate client and business development skills, establish professional stature both within the Firm and in the community, and begin to learn Firm leadership and management skills.  Level II associates are promoted to Senior Associate Level when the Firm is convinced that they have the potential to become a partner.  As a Senior Associate, you are expected to start doing partner level work, supervise other lawyers, and have the ability to attract new clients and strengthen relationships with existing clients.

Level I associates are evaluated twice yearly by their practice group while Level II and Senior Associates are evaluated, with the input of the lawyers for whom they work, by the Attorney Evaluation Committee.

Level II and Senior Associates are asked to create goals on an annual basis.  At the evaluation meetings, the associate is asked to discuss the accomplishment of their goals.

It is our desire that there are no surprises, but that throughout your career you know how you are progressing.  We encourage our lawyers to discuss concerns with the people for whom they work throughout the year.

Becoming a Partner

We hire lawyers with the expectation that they will progress to partnership. Ice Miller offers two tiers of partnership, with initial eligibility after 6 years. You will know the criteria for partnership and be able to work toward that goal throughout your career.

Ice Miller LLP's partner compensation system was created so the partners don't compete against one another, but work together to efficiently and effectively serve our client's needs and for the good of the Firm as a whole.
