Venture Capital Volume Declined 8.5% in First Quarter
Venture capital transaction volume dropped about 8.5 percent in the first quarter over the fourth quarter of 2007, according to data released by the MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, New York, and the National Venture Capital Association, Washington. Another survey by Dow Jones VentureSource, San Francisco, pegged the deal flow decline at seven percent, which the company said was the lowest level since the first quarter of 2005.

U.S. Puts China, Russia on "Priority Watch List" for IP Violations
The Bush administration is accusing China, Russia and seven other nations of failing to protect American producers of movies, computer software and other copyrighted material from widespread piracy. The administration placed the nine countries on a "priority watch list" that will subject them to extra scrutiny and could eventually lead to economic sanctions -- if the administration decides to pursue complaints before the World Trade Organization.

Treasury Official Urges Lifting Limits on Banks' P.E. Investments
The U.S. government should consider lifting limits on investments in banks by private equity firms, a U.S. Treasury official said, noting such firms played a key role in recent bank recapitalizations. Robert Steel, Treasury undersecretary for domestic finance, said his department had been discussing the issue with the U.S. Federal Reserve Board.

Supreme Court Seeks Advice in Sovereign Immunity for Patent Cases

IRS Audited One in 75 Companies in 2007
The Internal Revenue Service reviewed more corporate tax returns filed during the government's 2007 fiscal year than it had the previous year, which contributed to a 22 percent boost in revenue from enforcement activities. One of every 75 companies had its tax filing audited, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
