Issued Today: Accountable Care Organizations Rule
On Thursday, March 31, 2011, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued the Medicare Shared Savings Program: Accountable Care Organizations Rule (Proposed ACO Rule). Section 3022 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 required the Secretary of DHHS to establish a shared savings program by January 1, 2012. The long-awaited Proposed ACO Rule proposes a shared savings program for provider groups to establish accountable care organizations, agree to meet quality measures, and share in savings generated for Medicare by meeting certain cost and quality benchmarks.
