"Cybersecurity emerged in 2015 as one of the top priorities of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and it appears that this focus will only strengthen in the coming year. Following a year of increased examination and enforcement activity around cybersecurity, the SEC Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations ("OCIE") announced in January that cybersecurity controls at broker-dealers and investment advisers are one of the Office's top examination priorities for 2016. Following that announcement, senior members of the SEC Enforcement Division stated at the February "SEC Speaks" conference that cybersecurity is among the Staff's top enforcement priorities for 2016. Likewise, cybersecurity has become a key focus for FINRA, which has stressed the importance of effective cybersecurity practices for broker-dealers."
