Donation by Ice Miller Partner Lacy Johnson Helps Establish IU Diversity Professorship
Ice Miller LLP commends the generosity of partner Lacy Johnson,
whose substantial personal gift will lead to the creation of the Lacy M. Johnson Professorship for Diversity and Leadership at Indiana University. Lacy serves as co-chair to the Public Affairs and Gaming group at Ice Miller.
“Not only does Lacy have a long history of putting his time, money and personal resources into supporting Indiana’s minority communities, he presents his support in innovative, nontraditional ways—such as this professorship—that make even more substantive advancements than money alone could provide, ” said Steve Humke,
chief managing partner of Ice Miller. “Ice Miller as a firm, and individual professionals within it, have sought Lacy’s leadership as we continuously look for more meaningful ways to support diverse groups in our communities.”
Lacy’s gift of $525,000—matched by the IU Foundation, of which he is a board member—creates the first professorship within a non-academic unit at IU, becoming one of a select few in higher education. The professorship will provide support for initiatives and programs to further the services and resources within Indiana University’s Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (OVPDEMA). This gift is expected to expand diversity and equity initiatives and enhance the cultural climate for faculty and staff as well as underrepresented, LGBTQ, and first-generation students at IU.
IU President Michael A. McRobbie has appointed Dr. James C. Wimbush, IU’s vice president for diversity, equity, and multicultural affairs, dean of the University Graduate School, and Kelley School of Business professor of business administration, to this role.
Ice Miller is proud of the generosity and advancements Lacy has helped make in his community. He has served as a mentor to numerous people; has anonymously paid tuition of several students; advised many in finding jobs; and supported organizations that give life to Indianapolis’ diverse groups.
Lacy’s practice focuses on public affairs, and in prior roles he was an attorney for Government Relations Services at Sagamore-Bainbridge, Inc., director of security for the Indiana State Lottery, and held a number of senior leadership roles within the Indiana State Police. He is a former Lt. Commander of the United States Naval Intelligence Reserves.
