Ice Miller Among Group that Receives Community Shelter Board Hero Award
COLUMBUS – Ice Miller LLP was a part of the YMCA Winter Overflow Team to receive the Community Shelter Board Hero Award at the Together Rebuilding Lives luncheon. The Hero Award is presented to those who have made significant contributions in assisting families and individuals in Central Ohio to resolve their housing crisis.
The YMCA operated the temporary winter overflow shelter from Jan. 7 through March 31. It provided beds for up to 130 men and 60 women when winter capacity was needed to make sure no one faced a dangerously cold night on the streets.
Ice Miller contributed to the team effort by negotiating the lease with the landlord and working with the architect, contractors and government officials to assure the building met code requirements. The firm successfully defended a legal challenge by an adjoining property owner that would have prevented the shelter from opening its doors.
“Ice Miller believes strongly in community involvement,” said Jim Davidson, deputy managing partner for Ice Miller. “We appreciate the recognition from the Community Shelter Board, but the real reward is the difference we make in the lives of people who needed support and a safe place to sleep on cold winter nights.”
The Community Shelter Board, established in 1986, is a public-private partnership organization that creates collaborations, innovates solutions and invests in quality programs to end homelessness in Columbus and Franklin County. The Community Shelter Board allocates more than $14 million annually to support homeless programs and services. Ice Miller has served as the Board’s legal counsel since its establishment; Mel Schottenstein, founding partner of Schottenstein Zox and Dunn (SZD), was instrumental in founding the Community Shelter Board. SZD combined with Ice Miller in 2012.
