Ice Miller Welcomes Registered Patent Attorney Ryan Hiler
Ice Miller LLP is pleased to welcome Ryan Hiler to the Firm. Ryan has joined the Firm as a registered patent attorney and an associate in the Intellectual Property Group. Ryan’s practice focuses on all aspects of intellectual property including securing patents, trademarks, and copyrights, licensing, technology transactions, and litigation.
Ryan routinely assists clients with drafting and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications as well as preparing patent appeals before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; conducting intellectual property due diligence investigations; drafting opinions for freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity, patentability, and exclusivity; negotiating and structuring intellectual property transactions and drafting contracts, including confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements, strategic alliances, joint development agreements, research collaborations, licensing agreements, and distribution agreements; and designing strategies for clients’ intellectual property portfolios based on their goals and market expectations.
Ryan counsels clients in a wide range of fields, a small sampling of which includes the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, animal health, agriculture, diagnostic, medical device, automotive, computer, software, and internet fields. Ryan represents clients ranging from entrepreneurial start-ups to Fortune 100 corporations.

Ryan received his juris doctorate magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame Law School. He received a Master of Science in Biology, with focuses in molecular biology, biotechnology, and biological chemistry, from Purdue University. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science, with minors in Chemistry and Biology, from Indiana University.
Prior to joining Ice Miller, Ryan was a patent attorney at another Indianapolis law firm. He also was an intern with the Indiana State Senate, working with the Senate Chief of Staff and Chief Legal Counsel, and a judicial intern for the Honorable Mark S. Massa at the Indiana Supreme Court.
Passionate about his local community, Ryan has been active in the East Tenth United Methodist Children and Youth Center, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, and Hoosier Hills Food Bank.
Ryan is admitted to practice law in the state of Indiana and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana.
Outside of the office, Ryan enjoys being with friends and family, traveling, watching sports and movies, exercising, and spending time with his wife, Sheila, and their dog, Hoosier.
