Professional Experience:
Richard Schnurr is a registered patent attorney and litigating partner in Ice Miller's Intellectual Property Group. He has more than 20 years experience in all areas of intellectual property law, with special emphasis on litigation, licensing, opinion work and client counseling concerning the acquisition, protection and defense of intellectual property rights in the U.S. and abroad.
Schnurr’s litigation experience includes substantive roles as lead counsel and co-counsel in patent, trademark, unfair competition, copyright, antitrust, deceptive trade practices and other actions based on protection of business reputation and technology. He has argued cases before the U.S. Federal District Courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He has also participated in planning and prosecuting inter parties contested proceedings in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the European Patent Office including interferences, reexaminations and oppositions. He has also prosecuted patents and trademarks and coordinated protection of clients’ intellectual property portfolios in the chemical, mechanical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical arts based on applications filed in the U.S. and abroad.
He has concentrated in the area of intellectual property law since his graduation from the University of Illinois Law School in 1981. Schnurr is a member of the Trial Bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, is admitted to practice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Seventh Circuit, and has appeared in and/or argued cases filed in those Appellate Courts, the Chicago Federal District Court and in many other U.S. federal district courts across the U.S., as well as cases filed in various Illinois state courts. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and cum laude from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 1978 with double science majors in biology and environmental studies.
