Professional Experience:
Alex Forman is a partner in Ice Miller's Intellectual Property Group. His practice encompasses all facets of intellectual property law with an emphasis on information technology, licensing, patent, trademark and copyright portfolio management, and assisting clients in developing and implementing strategies that identify, protect and enforce their intellectual property assets.

Forman represents clients in obtaining patent and trademark protection in the U.S. and abroad in the fields of information technology, clean technology, renewable energy, sustainable development, manufacturing, mechanical, life sciences, and chemical compositions. In such representations, he works closely with the business management, marketing, legal, and research and development teams to determine goals and strategies in protecting the business's assets.

Forman serves as lead counsel in the negotiation of a variety of complex intellectual property and information technology transactions. His experiences include dealing with the acquisition of intellectual property assets in corporate transactions and representing both vendors and purchasers of information technology systems and related services. Such representations have included negotiating the acquisition or provision of a variety of information technology systems in the fields of manufacturing processes, debt collection, data and equipment hosting, support outsourcing, service management, financial and lending services, accounting, health, patient care, records management, imaging, and data security. As a result, Alex has a deep knowledge of the legal and business issues involved in information technology transactions, whether it be providing such technology on premise or as part of a cloud computing arrangement.

Forman's focus on information technology has resulted in him representing several hospitals and health care providers in the acquisition of health information technology, including, the acquisition of electronic health record systems and addressing meaningful use attestation issues. Similarly, Forman has developed a niche in representing retirement systems/pension funds in the acquisition of line-of-business, document imaging, data back up and financial evaluation software systems.

In all such transaction, he works closely with clients' procurement departments, information technology staff, outside consultants, financial personnel, and project managers. His engagements on larger projects often start at the request for proposal process stage and last through the completion of the implementation project.

Forman has combined all of above-described experiences in his involvement with Ice Miller's Green Industries Initiative. As part of such initiative, he has prepared and prosecuted patent applications and been involved in negotiation of the acquisition of a variety of different technologies for energy production, biofuel plants, and aerobic digestion.

Forman joined Ice Miller in 2000 as a law clerk and continued as an attorney in the Intellectual Property Group. He is admitted to practice law in the state of Indiana and to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to joining Ice Miller, he was an AmeriCorps member for the 21st Century Scholars Program in Indiana. During law school, he served as a law clerk for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and a research assistant for Professor George Edwards and the Program in International Human Rights Law of Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis. Forman earned his Bachelor of Arts in microbiology and environmental studies from Indiana University in 1997. He earned his juris doctorate, magna cum laude, from Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis in 2001. While in law school, he was a note development editor for the Indiana Law Review.
