Full Biography: Jay Gordon Taylor

Jay G. Taylor is a partner with the Intellectual Property Group of the firm of Ice Miller. Mr. Taylor received a B.S.M.E. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1964 and a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Indiana University in 1967, and was elected to the Order of Coif. He is admitted to practice before the Courts of the States of Indiana and Illinois, the United States District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of Indiana and the Northern District of Illinois (Trial Bar), the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal, Second and Seventh Circuits, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to moving to Indianapolis in 1990, Mr. Taylor practiced intellectual property law in Chicago, Illinois for over 20 years, first with Kirkland & Ellis and then with Haight & Hofeldt, a firm that focused on patent litigation.

In his litigation practice, Mr. Taylor has been involved in hundreds of intellectual property cases involving such diverse technological fields as electro-mechanical devices, pollution control apparatus, electronic equipment, ceramic compositions, ultraviolet curable inks, computers and digital equipment, computer software, medical and dental devices, chemical compositions and processes, micro-dialysis probes, hearing protection devices, gasoline distribution devices, high voltage electrical transmission equipment and plastic molding processes.

Mr. Taylor is a registered mediator in the State of Indiana and has completed the required forty hour mediation training course provided by the Indiana Continuing Legal Education forum. Mr. Taylor has also completed the 42 hour course Mediating The Litigated Case given by the Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine University School of Law. Mr. Taylor is also a member of the International Trademark Association's Panel of Neutrals and the panel of Lanham Act Neutrals for the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. As a litigator, Mr. Taylor has been involved in the mediation and settlement of over a hundred cases.

Mr. Taylor has had experience in all aspects of licensing, acquisition of and risk counseling regarding intellectual property rights. In his trademark practice, Mr. Taylor has represented nationally known trademark franchises, international businesses, and start-up businesses and he has counseled those businesses regarding the selection, protection, and enforcement of trademark, service mark, and trade dress rights, and the protection and enforcement of trade secret rights. Mr. Taylor has also represented authors, artists and agents in connection with the protection and commercial exploitation of their copyrighted works.

Mr. Taylor has been active in the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Chicago Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Federal Circuit Bar Association. He is a past chairman of the Patent, Trademark & Copyright Section of the Indiana State Bar Association. He is the author of articles on intellectual property law appearing in the Indiana and Illinois Bar Association Journals, and has been a speaker at numerous CLE seminars.
