Professional Experience:
Robert Gauss' primary area of practice is civil litigation with concentrations in commercial litigation (including Article 2, UCC Sales), commercial arbitration, construction litigation, representation of clients in transportation businesses, class actions, family law, general civil litigation and product liability.
Gauss is also a deputy managing partner of the Firm.
Gauss has experience helping businesses and individuals with disputes and in seeking opportunities to obtain favorable resolution for the Firm's clients as quickly as practicable. If necessary, he has significant trial experience to bring to bear on behalf of clients.
Before joining Ice Miller, Gauss served as a judge advocate with the United States Marine Corps, where he obtained the rank of captain. During his service with the Marine Corps, Gauss primarily served as a prosecutor and was involved in over 30 criminal trials, primarily as the first chair.
Gauss has built upon his trial experience at Ice Miller, having conducted, or been involved in, multiple bench and jury trials in both state and federal courts, and commercial arbitrations, including cases dealing with commercial disputes, class actions, personal injury, premises liability, patent infringement, trade secrets and various family law issues. He has also tried various commercial matters involving injunctions and restraining orders. As part of his practice related to transportation clients, Gauss is actively involved in the Indiana Motor Truck Association.
An Indianapolis native, Gauss received his Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in 1990. He earned a juris doctorate from the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, in 1993 where he was a recipient of the Cale J. Holder Memorial Scholarship in 1992 and a member of the Order of the Barristers in 1993.
He joined Ice Miller in May of 1997. He is a former chair of the Firm's Personnel Committee (2 years) in which he was responsible for the Firm's recruiting efforts and summer clerk program, and also has been the chair of the Firm's Professional Development Committee (5 years) for which he was responsible for coordinating the Firm's activities related to orientation, mentoring and training. In these roles, he was involved in all matters regarding the Firm's efforts and strategic planning involving diversity, recruiting, training and mentoring.
He is admitted to practice law in the state of Indiana and has represented clients in litigation or arbitration in other states, including Illinois, Kentucky, Florida, New York, South Dakota, Delaware and California.
