Julia Hawkins is a legal nurse consultant in Ice Miller's Litigation & Intellectual Property Group working primarily in the areas of medical malpractice defense and pharmaceutical product liability defense.
As a registered nurse in the state of Indiana, Hawkins assists attorneys by collecting, reviewing, summarizing and analyzing medical records and other pertinent medical and legal documents. She researches and integrates medical literature as it relates to medical facts and issues of the case, educates attorneys regarding medical issues, and drafts legal documents under the supervision of attorneys. During the discovery phase of litigation, Julia assists clients and attorneys with preparation of discovery requests to the plaintiff. She handles the collection of pertinent records and documents. She also assists with trial preparation, including preparation of medical record and other trial exhibits.
Prior to joining the Firm, Julia established a nursing career, spanning 30 years, with her primary area of cinical experience focused on peri-operative nursing. She has also been a faculty member at Purdue University and Indiana University-Kokomo as an instructor of nursing with lecture and clinical responsibilities for Fundamentals of Nursing, Child Health Nursing and Medical-Surgical Nursing. Her areas of clinical practice have included pediatric nursing at Riley Hospital, operating room nursing at Indiana University Hospital and Union Hospital, and peri-operative nursing at Indiana University Hospital and Parkview Hospital.
Julia earned her associate degree in nursing, with distinction, from Purdue University in 1973 and a Bachelor of Science in nursing, with distinction, from Indiana University in 1975. She has completed graduate nursing courses at Indiana University, as well.
Julia joined Ice Miller in September 2004.
