Ryan Hiler is an associate and a registered patent attorney in Ice Miller’s Intellectual Property Group. Ryan’s practice focuses on all aspects of intellectual property including securing patents, trademarks, and copyrights, licensing, technology transactions, and litigation.
Ryan routinely assists clients with drafting and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications as well as preparing patent appeals before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Ryan has extensive experience conducting intellectual property due diligence investigations and drafting opinions for freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity, patentability, and exclusivity. Ryan frequently negotiates and structures intellectual property transactions and drafts contracts, including confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements, strategic alliances, joint development agreements, research collaborations, licensing agreements, and master service agreements. Ryan also designs strategies for clients’ intellectual property portfolios based on their goals and market expectations.
Ryan counsels clients in a wide variety of fields, a small sampling of which includes the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, animal health, agriculture, diagnostic, medical device, computer, software, and internet fields. Ryan represents clients ranging from entrepreneurial start-ups to Fortune 100 corporations.
Ryan received his juris doctorate magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame Law School. He received a Master of Science in Biology, with focuses in molecular biology, biotechnology, and biological chemistry, from Purdue University. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science, with minors in Chemistry and Biology, from Indiana University.
Before joining Ice Miller, Ryan was an intellectual property attorney in private practice for two years. He also was an intern with the Indiana State Senate, working with the Senate Chief of Staff and Chief Legal Counsel, and a judicial intern for the Honorable Mark S. Massa at the Indiana Supreme Court.
Passionate about his local community, Ryan has been active in the East Tenth United Methodist Children and Youth Center, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, and Hoosier Hills Food Bank.
Ryan is admitted to practice law in the state of Indiana and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana.
Outside of the office, Ryan enjoys being with friends and family, traveling, watching sports and movies, exercising, and spending time with his wife, Sheila, and their dog, Hoosier.
