Sarah K. Funke practices in the area of employee benefits law, with a primary focus on welfare benefit plans and qualified plans of for-profit entities. She works with clients to design, implement, and maintain their plans in compliance with the numerous laws affecting employee benefit plans, including ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, USERRA, and the Internal Revenue Code.
As part of her practice, she regularly advises clients on issues pertaining to health care reform law and related regulations (PPACA).
Sarah assists clients on a variety of aspects pertaining to employee benefit plans, such as plan formation, design and implementation; legal and administrative compliance; review and negotiation of contracts; and resolution of issues with third-party providers who provide services to benefit plans. She reviews and drafts plan documentation to help ensure compliance with the requirements under applicable laws. She also works with clients to help them understand how these laws apply to their plans from an administrative and practical perspective, advising them regarding day-to-day compliance, reporting and other issues.
Prior to her practice in the employee benefits area, Sarah worked for more than 15 years in the area of commercial real estate transactions, where she represented and advised clients, both regional and national, in transactions involving matters such as acquisitions and sales, development, finance and leasing, as well as the formation of entities to own and operate properties. She has regularly advised clients with respect to the acquisition, sale and development of commercial real estate properties, such as office and hotel properties. She also has represented and counseled clients with respect to financing transactions, including construction, permanent and mezzanine financing. In addition, she has worked with clients with respect to commercial leasing transactions, with a primary concentration on office leasing. Her transactional experience also includes extensive experience with respect to drafting and negotiating a wide variety of contracts.
Sarah attended Indiana University, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and graduated, with highest honors, in 1991, earning a Bachelor of Arts in english. She holds a juris doctorate from Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where she served on the Indiana Law Journal and graduated magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, in 1994. She is a member of the American Bar Association, Tax Section.
Sarah joined Ice Miller in 1994 and is admitted to practice law in the State of Indiana.
