Ice Miller's Alternative Investments Group offers a broad range of legal advice and services to limited partner and separate account clients in connection with their alternative investment programs.
Every day, we represent a wide variety of institutional investors such as public retirement systems, national banks, insurance companies, corporate pension plans, colleges and universities, endowments and foundations, church plans, national trade associations and family offices. Since the late 1980s, we have advised these clients in the collective investment of billions of dollars in well over a thousand private equity and other comingled funds and separate account transactions.
Our attorneys have significant experience evaluating, structuring and negotiating alternative investments across the full range of strategies, both domestic and international. Our attorneys are experienced with alternative investments of all sizes, ranging from funds (including SBIC funds) and separate accounts in the $25-150 million range, to middle market regional funds from $250 million and above, to the largest multi-billion dollar buyout and secondary funds and fund-of-funds. We also regularly advise our institutional investor clients regarding the protection of their alternative investments in distressed or troubled funds or other arrangements.
By working closely with our limited partner clients throughout each stage of their alternative investments and through our annual "roundtable" meetings with the investment and legal staff of our clients, Ice Miller's Alternative Investments Group has a greater understanding of each client's particular needs and obligations, such as the concerns of tax-exempt investors, application of ERISA and similar state statutes, and regulatory or other limitations placed on commitment levels, investment structures and investment concentrations. In addition, our attorneys are frequent presenters on alternative investment topics. Our transaction volume provides us with a keen understanding of current and historical market conditions and practices and our clients benefit from our integrated approach that involves attorneys experienced in several practice areas including tax, securities, corporate finance, ERISA, creditors' rights and, if necessary, litigation.
