Great Expectations: Nonprofit Organizations, Sarbanes-Oxley, and Best Practices

The nonprofit sector, once a rest area on the highway of commerce, is generating increased interest both because of the good work that it is doing and the large amount of money that it is currently managing.  This increased visibility has created an opportunity for the New York Times and the Boston Globe to highlight alleged improprieties of a few private foundations and large public charities. On occasion, we are asked by nonprofits how they might develop governance safeguards to limit the risks of mismanagement and scandal.  Here is our suggested approach.
