HIPAA

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 – HIPAA – imposes national standards to protect the privacy of individuals' health information and the electronic transmission of health care transactions. It affects most health care providers and health plans (including employer-sponsored group health plans) – "covered entities" in HIPAA parlance. To protect individuals' health privacy, covered entities must make new personnel designations, distribute notices to patients and employees, develop written policies, train employees, and execute new contracts.
