Smart Cities and Communities Act of 2017 Calls for Assistance

As referenced in a prior blog, the Smart Cities and Communities Act of 2017 (S.1904) was recently introduced by Senator Cantwell. The Act calls for the establishment of $100 million grant program for each fiscal year, 2018 through 2022, for local governments to fund up to 50 percent of demonstration projects focused on advanced smart city technologies and systems.

Cantwell, Maria [D-WA] introduced the Smart Cities and Communities Act of 2017 (S.1904) to “promote smart technologies and systems to improve community livability, services, communication, safety, mobility, energy productivity, and resilience to natural and manmade disasters, to reduce costs, traffic congestion, and air pollution, and to promote economic growth and opportunities for communities of all sizes…”

Last week, Ice Miller partner Kip Tew was fortunate to be a judge in the Innovation Alley of the Smart Cities Council Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. Eight entities pitched their ideas before four judges. The criteria for evaluation included innovation of course, but also considered ideas that would strengthen community infrastructure, improve the quality of life, were helpful in providing transparency (of information, decision making and policy) and promoted economic opportunity.
