Heather James to Represent Ice Miller at Fall 2018 Diversity in Law Hackathon Series
April 13, 2018
Ice Miller partner Heather Jameswill represent Ice Miller at the Fall 2018 Diversity in Law Hackathon Series beginning July 12-13, 2018 in Chicago. Heather will participate in the pitch competition featuring 105 high-level law firm partners and legal department leaders from across the country. The goal of the competition is to increase diversity and inclusion in law firms and legal departments.

Participants will be organized into teams and meet in-person at the kick-off event in July at Northwestern Law in Chicago. They will then work together virtually for three or four months. The teams will present their innovative ideas aimed at increasing and sustaining diversity in law, including retention and advancement of diverse lawyers, at the final in-person pitch event on Nov. 1-2, 2018 at UC Hastings College of Law in San Francisco. After the competition, participants will have access to more than 16 new ideas to consider implementing at their companies.

“We take great pride in building a culture of inclusion at Ice Miller, and our goal is to have a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve,” said Judy Okenfuss, deputy managing partner at Ice Miller. “We are excited to have Heather represent the Firm and look to her to bring back innovative ideas that will further our diversity and inclusion efforts.”

The event was created by the Diversity Lab in collaboration with Bloomberg Law. The Diversity Lab is an organization committed to closing the gender gap and boosting diversity in law firms, legal departments and banks. The Diversity in Law Hackathon is the second hackathon series hosted by the Diversity Lab. In 2016, the Diversity Lab introduced the Women in Law Hackathon, which led to the Mansfield Rule. Inspired by the NFL’s Rooney Rule, the Mansfield Rule requires law firms to include at least 30 percent women and minority lawyers in the candidate pool for leadership positions.
