Ice Miller Attorneys Volunteer at Legal Clinic for DACA Recipients

Ice Miller Attorneys Volunteer at Legal Clinic for DACA Recipients
January 18, 2018
On Sept. 5, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was rescinded. DACA protected nearly 800,000 children and young adults—known as Dreamers—from deportation and allowed them to work lawfully in the United States.

With several DACA recipients seeking immigration relief and legal counsel, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic (NCLC) planned a number of DACA Renewal Clinic Days, and our attorneys stepped in to provide assistance.

Jenifer Brown, partner and vice chair of the Firm's Labor, Employment and Immigration Practice Group, is a frequent volunteer with the NCLC. She will work alongside other attorneys and volunteers for a DACA Renewal Day from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 at NCLC, located at 3333 N. Meridian St. in Indianapolis. Ice Miller is a co-sponsor of this event.

“This is a vulnerable population,” Jenifer told Fox59. “These are kids who came here through no participation of their own.”

Volunteer lawyers will assist eligible recipients in renewing their DACA benefits, help participants explore other possible opportunities for immigration relief and inform participants of their legal rights in the U.S. Additionally, non-lawyers will volunteer by assisting with registration, screening, logistics, photocopying and Spanish language interpreting.
Previously, Ice Miller sponsored a DACA Clinic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 23 at the Avondale Meadows YMCA. Ice Miller was also a sponsor of the NCLC’s Justice for All Gala on Oct. 5.

Jenifer practices exclusively in the area of immigration law. She represents and advises corporations, organizations, and colleges and universities in the filing of nonimmigrant and immigrant petitions with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Departments of Labor and State. She also counsels clients on I-9 employment verification, social security mismatch issues and e-verify. Finally, Jenifer assists clients with the transfer of key personnel on short- and long-term assignments abroad.
