Guillermo Christensen Presented at Two RANE Webinars
March 19, 2019

Guillermo Christensen, a partner in Ice Miller’s Litigation and White Collar Defense Groups, participated in two Risk Assistance Network Exchange (RANE) webinars, which focused on the potential risks of conducting business in China and how to circumvent them.

In the first webinar, “Regulation, Not Trade War, Is the Real Business Risk in China,” Guillermo was joined by fellow speakers Rebecca Fair, Co-Founder and CEO of Thresher, and Mark Christopher, Truman National Security Project Fellow. DeNeige Watson, RANE’s Executive Director of Geopolitical Risk, moderated the discussion. The panel offered insight on the increased tension of doing business in China following the arrest of Huawei Technologies Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou and the resulting implications.

The second webinar, “Navigating the Chinese Market: A Roundtable Discussion,” covered what businesses should expect when first breaking into the Chinese market. Guillermo was joined on this panel by Marc Ross, founder of Caracal Global, and Tom Pellman, director and head of the D.C. office for Blackpeak. RANE Account Manager Campbell Gatehouse served as the moderator. The panel also shared perspectives on avoiding risks associated with geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington, the Chinese regulatory environment and data protection.

“China isn’t the Wild West, in terms of regulation, but the regulatory environment is susceptible to local vaguery,” Guillermo explained during the webinar. “Most corruption investigations in China are going to involve a state-owned entity and government officials, and the attention will be on who is accused of receiving the benefits of corrupt activity.”
