Jeni Britton Bauer started making ice creams in Columbus’s North Market in 1996, combining the best milk and cream she could buy with the fruits, vegetables and spices she bought from farmers and other market purveyors. Prior to making the jump to ice cream, she studied art, worked in a bakery and had a serious hobby blending perfumes and collecting essential oils. When her first ice cream business folded, she took some time off, only to be inundated by fans who begged her to get back in the ice cream business. In 2002, Jeni came back strong, founding Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in the same market stall she had tried and failed the first time. Her ahead-of-the-trend vision—using whole ingredients and dairy from grass-pastured cows, rather than synthetic flavorings and commodity ice cream mix—coupled with inspired flavors sparked the artisan ice cream movement more than a decade before it would become a top food trend.

Today, Jeni is known as America’s top ice cream maker, and her company has grown nationally with her ice creams on the shelves of America’s top retailers, her signature scoop shops in 8 cities from LA to DC, and America’s largest direct-to-home ice cream shipping business. Jeni’s team has grown to over 1,500 employees, including a more than 50 person home office in Columbus with talent recruited from some of America’s top companies.
