Ice Miller LLP partner and ex-CIA officer Guillermo Christensen similarly said he applauds the ban for forcing a discussion about facial recognition, but that a long-term prohibition could hamper law enforcement since there are good uses for the technology.
"You can imagine Times Square on New Year's Eve. Most people would say, you know, having short-term facial recognition on a crowd like that, especially if you have a reported threat, is probably a good idea," he said.
"This is a good level-setting effort, and the question now is, where do they go from here in terms of how do they put together some privacy principles, some data-use principles, around this extremely powerful technology?" Christensen added.
