Indiana Compliance Officers Roundtable on ‘Cybersecurity: The New Business Priority’ Recap

Compliance officers and in-house counsel for Indiana companies gathered in November in Indianapolis for an educational presentation and discussion on current issues and challenges related to Data Privacy and Cybersecurity.  The Indiana Compliance Officers Roundtable held another successful event that focused on a topic that is top of mind for many businesses and organizations.
With data breaches and data hacking becoming more common and garnering greater attention from the public, consumers and regulators, understanding, evaluating and mitigating risk in this area is more important than ever before. Companies without a deliberate and preplanned strategy on how to mitigate the risk of data breach and how to handle the issues should a data breach occur may find themselves at risk of quickly losing stakeholder confidence.
The presentation was led by a distinguished panel with broad experience on these timely and evolving issues:
Nick Merker, Attorney, Leader of Data Security and Privacy Practice Group, Ice Miller LLP spoke on "Trending Privacy Concerns"
Chris Eck, SVP, General Counsel, Corporate Secretary, The Finish Line spoke on "Cybersecurity Risk Disclosure Guidance"
James Watson, Associate Division Counsel, Indianapolis FBI Field Office, spoke on trends and developments related to cybersecurity and data privacy.
Following the presentation, which included 1 hour of Indiana Ethics Continuing Legal Education credit, the panel and attendees continued informal dialog on the issues and attended a networking reception to meet and exchange ideas with their peers from various sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, financial, utilities, retail, and higher education.  New acquaintances were made, some old acquaintances were renewed, contact information was exchanged, and best practices were discussed.
The Indiana Compliance Officers Roundtable was formed in late 2013 as a networking and educational forum for in-house compliance and legal personnel who provide compliance related services at their companies and organizations.  The Roundtable holds two meetings each year—one in the Spring and a Fall meeting.  The next meeting of the Roundtable will be in the Spring of 2015.
The Government Enforcement, Internal Investigations and Corporate Compliance group at Ice Miller LLP is providing administrative and organizational support for the Roundtable.  Ice Miller will also maintain a contact and email list for those companies and organizations participating in the Roundtable. There is no charge to participate in the Roundtable.
To learn more about the Roundtable and to add your company or organization to the email list for updates and other information supporting compliance personnel and in-house counsel, please contact Nick Merker, Dale Stackhouse or Matt Fornshell at Ice Miller LLP.
