A political newcomer, Greg Ballard, did enter that race, and he shocked the political establishment by defeating Peterson. Anyone who believes Hogsett can’t lose need only to look back at the 2007 election.

Ballard, by the way, will endorse Merritt at today’s event and serve as the campaign’s co-chair along with Melissa Proffitt, a partner at Ice Miller.

Merritt was chairman of Ballard’s campaign in 2007. He helped from behind the scenes then to stage what may well be the biggest political upset in the city’s history. Now, he'll try to pull of another upset with his own name on the ballot.
