Tech Startups Cut Back on Spending as Venture Capital Wanes
As investor sentiment in the tech industry cools, start-ups are facing a new reality: Money doesn't always come easily. The abundant venture capital funding that convinced companies they could stay private longer is now harder to come by -- such funding in Silicon Valley fell 19.5 percent in the first quarter of 2016 compared with the same period in 2015 -- so small and midsize start-ups are trying to outlast the downturn by cutting back on one of tech's trademark innovations: outlandish spending.

IPOs Dwindle, While Unregistered Offerings Continue to Gain Favor
Fewer and fewer U.S. companies are going public, while new exempt offerings created to encourage investment in small, growing businesses are gaining ground. According to a recent projection of initial public offerings by Bloomberg Law Corporate Transactions, there may be only 88 completed IPOs this year, down from 213 in 2015 and 291 in 2014.

House of Representatives Approves 'Defend Trade Secrets Act'
The U.S. Congress passed and sent to President Barack Obama legislation strengthening legal protection for companies' trade secrets, including manufacturing processes and computer methods. The House of Representatives voted 410-2 to approve the "Defend Trade Secrets Act" on the heels of it being unanimously passed by the Senate earlier this month.

Chobani Highlights Shifting Trend in Employee Ownership
Employees of Chobani learned that they could eventually own about 10 percent of the rapidly expanding Greek yogurt company- a move that could potentially make millionaires of some workers, if the privately held company is sold or goes public. Corey Rosen, of the National Center for Employee Ownership, says employee ownership takes many different forms, and in a growing number of companies, workers own the firms outright.

Taxpayers Have Reined in Corporate Subsidies by 70% Since 2013
States and cities have dramatically scaled back taxpayer subsidies to corporations in the past two years, doling out fewer and smaller breaks to lure development projects. Government subsidies of at least $50 million have plummeted about 70 percent since 2013, according to an analysis by Good Jobs First, a union-funded research and advocacy group that tracks the cost of tax breaks.
