Nasdaq CEO Says Regulation is Having Significant Impact on IPOs
The number of companies taking their businesses public so far this year may be indicative of a healthy IPO market, but according to Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman, regulation is derailing companies' decisions to go public. Year-to-date, 160 companies have gone public on the Nasdaq, compared to 96 this time last year, she said, but in 1996, there were more than 697 IPOs.

Trump Signs Small Business Innovation Protection Act
Legislation designed to help small businesses safeguard their intellectual property with expanded education on obtaining and protecting patents was recently signed into law by President Donald Trump. The Small Business Innovation Protection Act seeks to build upon existing outreach programs run by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, to better inform small businesses on domestic and international intellectual property protections.

Trade Group Asks Stock Exchanges to Limit Unequal Voting Rights
A trade group representing top U.S. pension funds and asset managers, including BlackRock and T. Rowe Price Group, will ask stock exchanges to limit how long companies may operate with unequal voting rights for shareholders. The move is meant as a compromise to solve one of the trickiest issues in American corporate governance, said Ken Bertsch, director of the Council of Institutional Investors, based in Washington, D.C., which organized the effort.

According to recent research done by Harvard Business School, women are less than 10 percent of the entrepreneurial and venture-capital labor pool, Hispanics have been around two percent and African Americans have been less than one percent. Equity crowdfunding platform Republic CEO believes equity crowdfunding can overcome many of the challenges women and minorities have historically faced when it comes to raising venture capital for their startups.

SEC officials recently released details of an investigative report based on the SEC Enforcement Division's probe of nine public companies that fell victim to cyber fraud and lost millions of dollars in the process.

A respected medical journal published a research paper on its website that analyzed the effects of a business trend roiling the field of dermatology: the rapid entrance of private equity firms into the specialty by buying and running practices around the country. Furor over the publication and subsequent removal of the article has deepened a rift in the field over what some see as the "corporatization" of dermatology and other areas of medicine.
