Ice Miller Continues Participation in Mansfield Rule 6.0 Certification

Ice Miller is pleased to announce its participation in the industry-wide Mansfield 6.0 Certification process alongside over 180 other large law firms across the country. In doing so, Ice Miller commits to considering at least 30 percent women, lawyers from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, lawyers with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ lawyers for top leadership roles, senior-level lateral hiring, promotions into the equity partnership and participation in client pitch meetings.

“As we continue our journey to becoming a more inclusive and diverse Firm, this initiative is one more tool to help us grow and manage our talent pipeline to ensure our Firm reflects the diversity of our clients and communities,” said Michael Millikan, Ice Miller's chief managing partner.

The goal of the Mansfield rule is to boost the representation of lawyers from historically underrepresented groups in law firm leadership by broadening the pool of candidates considered for these opportunities.

“Diversity and inclusion is a top priority for our Firm,” said Millikan. “Continued participation in the Mansfield Certification process is one way we can continue to demonstrate our commitment to diversity and inclusion and stay focused on diversifying our leadership ranks at Ice Miller."

The Mansfield Rule measures whether law firms have considered lawyers from historically underrepresented groups for significant governance roles, lateral openings and promotions. Now in its fifth year, this iteration of the Mansfield Rule includes new challenges to continuously push the boundaries necessary to boost diversity in law firm leadership. New for Mansfield 6.0, firm must also commit to considering 30 percent of historically underrepresented talent for C-suite roles. Firms are also asked to share lessons learned with each other through monthly knowledge sharing forums and continue to meet routine check-in, data-collection, and reporting milestones. Finally, firms are required to create and publish job descriptions for leadership roles. And to ensure Mansfield’s long-term results, there is an increasingly difficult “Certification Plus” category that evaluates whether firms have achieved diversity in leadership, not just considered it. To attain this higher level of certification, firms’ advancement and compensation processes must now be transparent internally.
