Ice Miller Ranked a Cybersecurity Standout in 2020 BTI Report

Ice Miller LLP was ranked a Cybersecurity Standout in Litigation in the BTI Cybersecurity & Data Privacy 2020: Leading-Edge Insight & Strategy for Law Firms. BTI is a consulting group that conducts independent research on how clients acquire, manage and evaluate their professional service providers.

To determine rankings, BTI interviews more than 250 decision makers, such as chief legal officers, general counsel, data privacy officers and chief compliance officers. BTI pinpoints decision makers’ top concerns, issues and strategies and asks which firms are best.

“Data Security and Privacy is one of our Firm's fastest growing areas of practice, and this achievement demonstrates the quality of work the team provides clients,” said John Burke, chair of Ice Miller's Litigation Group.

Ice Miller’s team was ranked alongside 108 other global law firms, of which more than 80 percent are significantly larger in revenue and number of lawyers. This demonstrates how an entrepreneurial and tech-savvy approach has enabled the team to grow quickly to a total of 16 lawyers dedicated to this work.

“Cybersecurity and privacy decision makers ranking Ice Miller as a standout law firm is undoubtedly due to the breadth of our practice, which includes the proactive mitigation of complex litigation risk that invariably arise when dealing with the ever-changing and overlapping cybersecurity and privacy obligations clients face,” said Reena Bajowala, a partner in the Data Security and Privacy Practice.

Ice Miller’s Data Security and Privacy practice has worked multiple, complex litigation and regulatory enforcement matters involving ransomware, fund transfer fraud, redirected payroll, medical records compromises, insider threats and unauthorized access to client computing resources. The practice is heavily involved in work involving the European Union’s GDPR and in California around the CCPA, as well as cross-border incident and breach response.

“What sets apart Ice Miller’s Data Security and Privacy Practice is our technology acumen,” said Nick Merker, chair of the Data Security and Privacy Practice. “We are former engineers, computer scientists, military and intelligence professionals with information security backgrounds, in some cases, going back 30 years. We understand the technologies at issue and can explain these concepts to judges, juries and regulators in a way others cannot.”

Guillermo Christensen, a Data Security and Privacy partner, based in D.C. and New York, noted that the combination of technology professionals and national security backgrounds, including a former US Air Force intelligence officer, a former Marine Corps communications specialist and his own CIA background, allows the team to address threats ranging from criminal hackers to nation-states. The expertise of our team has also been recognized by the Department of Homeland Security, which tapped Guillermo for two Analytical Exchange Program projects around nation-state threats and a forthcoming one on the future evolution of cyber law.
