Ice Miller’s Samuel Porter Named to 2021 40 Under 40 Class

Ice Miller congratulates senior counsel Samuel H. Porter III on being named to the Columbus Business First’s 2021 40 Under 40 list. Sam and his fellow honorees will be celebrated with a virtual event on May 27.

Sam, a senior counsel in Ice Miller’s Public Affairs and Gaming Practices, has an extensive background combining public service, government counsel, liquor control and gaming compliance, which allows him to provide multi-dimensional service to his clients.

Sam started his career “fighting crime” as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Franklin County. In his next role, as Assistant Chief Legal Counsel to Governor Kasich, Sam worked directly on legal and policy matters facing Ohio. Recognizing Sam's legal and professional skills, the Governor appointed Sam as Executive Director to the Ohio Liquor Control Commission. There, Sam revitalized business policies for an industry with annual sales more than $1 billion. Governor Kasich appointed Sam to the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board to review Ohio properties for the Historic Register. Sam's success with the Governor and the Commission were soon recognized by Penn National Gaming, where he oversaw all compliance operations in Ohio for its casinos, racinos and horse racing.

“Sam’s diverse career in government and public service sets him apart,” said Michael B. Coleman, an Ice Miller partner and former Mayor of Columbus. “There is no doubt 2020 was a challenging year, and Sam played an instrumental role in serving our clients’ needs during this difficult time. He worked with numerous clients defined as essential workers to obtain proper credentials and government clearance to ensure critical infrastructure continued.”

In addition to his legal work, Sam and his wife Sandi are “Mr. and Mrs. Fourth of July,” Along with a team of community volunteers, they help plan all events for Upper Arlington’s 4th of July, which hosts up to 50,000 people each year. From organizing all parade entrants and hosting a float-building workshop to submitting the myriad of forms necessary to arrange a military flyover, the team ensures the night is full of excitement and revelry to celebrate our nation’s independence. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, they thought outside the box and created safe and memorable events for 2020.

Sam is also active with Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board, the Association of Ohio Commodores, Upper Arlington Civic Association, Pelotonia, and the Ohio State Bar Association.

“What has always stood out to me most about Sam is his devotion to service and to his community in both large and small ways,” said Deborah Pryce, Ice Miller principal. “His longstanding commitment to public service and quickly growing law practice make him an ideal recipient of the 40 Under 40 recognition.”

Since 1993, Columbus Business First has recognized Central Ohio’s young talent through the annual 40 Under 40 program. Each year, the 40 honorees, who are under the age of 40, are judged on their outstanding career achievements and community service. Sam was selected for this honor from more than 250 nominations. “It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by Columbus Business First,” said Sam. “I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in my legal practice, the immeasurable support I’ve had along the way from my family and mentors, and I’m proud to continue to support my community and to serve others.”
