Ice Miller Welcomes Four Columbus Attorneys

Ice Miller LLP is pleased to announce the arrival of four new attorneys to four different practice groups in its Columbus office.
 
Matthew “Matt” Diaz is an associate in Ice Miller’s Data Security and Privacy Practice Group. Matt earned his juris doctorate from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. While in law school, Matt served as the editor-in-chief of I/S – Ohio State’s Technology Law Journal. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and political science, cum laude, from the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa. While at USF, he served on the university’s board of trustees and was student body president. Prior to joining Ice Miller, Matt was a policy specialist for Connect Ohio, a nonprofit organization focused on facilitating broadband access, adoption and use throughout the state of Ohio. In this role, Matt monitored broadband and privacy matters in the United States Congress, at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and in state legislatures across the country. He also assisted in advocacy efforts promoting broadband deployment in Ohio.

D. Kirk Marker is an associate in Ice Miller’s Litigation Group. Kirk earned his juris doctorate from Capital University Law School. During law school, Kirk was a judicial extern for the Honorable Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger at the Supreme Court of Ohio, as well as the Honorable Chief Judge Edmund A. Sargus, Jr. at the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Kirk served as a teaching assistant for the Legal Research and Writing Program. Kirk also received the CALI Award for Excellence (top student) in several classes. In addition to his juris doctor, Kirk is a certified Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) and LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP). Prior to law school, Kirk worked for a regional construction company where he served in several positions, including project engineer, project manager, senior project manager, preconstruction manager, project executive, BIM technology manager and civic/municipal division manager.
 
James (Jim) Smolik is an associate in Ice Miller’s Business Group where his practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, corporate finance and general corporate matters. Jim received his juris doctor from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from the University of Dayton. During law school, Jim was a staff editor for The Ohio State Business Law Journal and served as a Moritz Board Fellow where he served on the board of directors for a local nonprofit. Prior to law school, Jim worked in public affairs, and he is a veteran of numerous state and federal political campaigns. Most recently, Jim served as the grassroots coordinator for Congressman Pat Tiberi.
 
Scott Surovjak is an associate in Ice Miller’s Real Estate Group where he assists clients in all areas of commercial real estate, including acquisitions and dispositions, finance, development, leasing, land use and zoning, entity structuring and joint ventures. Originally from Port Clinton, Ohio, Scott received his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University in 2008 and his law degree from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2016. While in law school, Scott interned at a major retailer, the Supreme Court of Ohio and the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. He was also an active member of the Ohio State Law Journal, which published his note on Lake Erie water quality in 2016. Scott was chosen by his peers as the inaugural recipient of the Christopher M. Fairman Award, which recognizes a student’s acceptance of individual differences and support of free expression as essential parts of a strong and inclusive community. Prior to attending law school, Scott worked in state and federal campaign politics, as well as in Ohio state government.
