Ice Miller Welcomes Matt Oyster as Of Counsel in Public Affairs

Ice Miller LLP today announced the addition of Matt Oyster to the firm’s public affairs group. Matt joins the firm as Of Counsel and will be based in Columbus, Ohio where he will specialize in gaming, liquor and cannabis legal matters throughout the country. He joins the firm having most recently served as vice president of compliance at PointsBet USA. In that role, he led regulatory, compliance and licensing functions related to sports betting, iGaming and ADW operations.

“Matt’s unique understanding of gaming issues from the client’s perspective immediately creates additional synergies within the work we do and within our firm. His demeanor, skillset and professional experience could not be a more welcome addition or come at a better time,” said John Oberle, a partner in Ice Miller’s Ohio Government Law Group.

Previously, Oyster also served as general counsel and chief ethics officer at the Ohio Casino Control Commission. As the agency’s principal legal and ethics advisor and legislative liaison, he oversaw the legal division, which advises the commission on an array of issues, including gaming, labor and employment, criminal law and procedure, sunshine and ethics laws, conflict resolution and Ohio’s Administrative Procedures Act.

“Whether you are a regulator or the entity being regulated, having outside counsel who best understand your needs is a must. Matt brings a level of expertise that will provide immediate value to our current and future clients who are looking for the best strategic counsel and advice available,” said Ice Miller public affairs practice group chair Lawren Mills.

Oyster began his legal career as an assistant attorney general in the Charitable Law Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. He represented the state in matters concerning charitable trusts, solicitation, and bingo; the Liquor Control Act; and the Casino Control Act.

Oyster obtained his Bachelor of Arts and juris doctor from Ohio Northern University’s Getty College of Arts and Sciences and Claude W. Pettit College of Law, respectively.

In addition to Oyster, Ice Miller’s Public Affairs Group recently welcomed Joe Heaton as a senior director of public affairs
