Indiana Lawyer Recognizes Ice Miller’s Richard Thrapp with Distinguished Barrister Award

Ice Miller LLP partner Richard Thrapp has been honored by the Indiana Lawyer with receipt of a Leadership in Law Distinguished Barrister Award. This honor recognizes Thrapp for his exceptional professional qualities and accomplishments as well as his career-long commitment to his community. Each year, the Indiana Lawyer honors members of the legal profession who have a sustained record of service with the Leadership in Law Distinguished Barrister Award.
“By selflessly dedicating his time to boards, committees and organizations that are oriented to getting results, Rich has made an impact on both the legal profession in Indiana and in the area of community service,” said Steve Humke, chief managing partner of Ice Miller. “We congratulate Rich on receiving this much-deserved honor.”
As a corporate lawyer with more than 32 years of experience, Thrapp’s contribution to the legal community includes drafting legislation and advising the Indiana General Assembly in the area of business law legislation. He has served as corporate, transaction and/or general counsel to manufacturing and distribution companies, energy and utility companies, major foundations, and accounting and law firms, among others. He advises on relationships and agreements between business owners/partners, including family businesses, and has experience in resolution of disputes that may arise in these relationships. He is also a member of Ice Miller’s Agricultural Law Initiative.
In the area of community service, he has chaired the Board of Child Advocates (CASA), and currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Conner Prairie Museum, where he recently chaired its CEO Search Committee. He also currently serves on the Boards of the Conner Prairie Foundation, the Indianapolis Zoological Society, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Inc. (and its Pacers Bikeshare program), and the Oakwood Foundation.
As a result of his work, Thrapp was appointed to the Indiana Business Law Survey Commission, a 14 member commission appointed by the Governor and administered by the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office to advise and make recommendations to the General Assembly on business laws. In 2006 he was elected as chair of the Commission, a role in which he continues to serve today.
Thrapp also has served through the years in many different capacities with the Indianapolis Bar Association, including its Board of Managers, chair of its Business Law Section, and chair of its Legal Services Committee (and Lawyer Referral Program), and as a member of the Nominating Committee. He cites his most rewarding roles with the IndyBar as serving on the Bar Leadership Series Committee for the development of up and coming leaders in the Bar, and teaching for a number of years Corporate and Business Organizations Law for the IndyBar Review program. He has also served on the Board of the Indianapolis Bar Foundation. At the state bar level, he has chaired the Investments Committee of the Indiana State Bar Association, and currently serves on the Board of the Indiana Bar Foundation.
