Onica Matsika Named to 2022 40 Under 40 Class

Ice Miller congratulates Onica Matsika on being named to the 2022 National Black Lawyers (NLB) Top 40 Under 40 List. The NBL Top 40 Under 40 recognizes 40 of the most talented Black attorneys from each state or region. 

Each year, NBL members nominate their peers for the Top 40 Under 40 selection process. Nominees must meet certain criteria to receive an invitation to join the Top 40 Under 40 class. Some of these qualifications include having an outstanding reputation among peers, the judiciary and the public; notable achievements, settlements and verdicts as a lawyer; and nominations from leading lawyers, current members and Executive Committee members. 

Onica, an attorney in the Firm’s Business Group, represents private companies, startups and nonprofits across various industries on entity formation, mergers and acquisitions, financing, and general corporate governance. Her responsibilities include drafting and negotiating acquisition, sale, financing, joint venture, operating, confidentiality and consulting agreements. She also serves as outside counsel for clients on matters related to daily operational issues, board of directors training, employment matters, compliance with state and federal regulations, and internal policy development.

In addition to her legal practice, Onica is an advocate for the arts, education, and social change. She is a board member of several Chicago nonprofit organizations and a sought-after speaker on corporate matters and diversity, equity & inclusion. In 2020 she was a recipient of the Ice Miller Director’s Pro Bono Award for her pro-bono leadership and service in the Chicago community. Within the Firm she serves on several internal committees, including the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, as well as the Recruitment and Mentoring Committees.
