Phil Genetos and Kayla Ernst Selected as Leadership in Law Honorees

Ice Miller is proud to announce that partner Phil Genetos and associate Kayla Ernst have been selected as 2022 Leadership in Law honorees by The Indiana Lawyer. Genetos received the Distinguished Barrister Award, while Ernst was recognized as an Up and Coming Lawyer.

The annual Leadership in Law Awards honor members of the legal community who have shown a commitment to their profession as well as to the clients and communities they serve. As 2022 honorees, Genetos and Ernst will be recognized on Wednesday, June 1, at an event celebrating all Leadership in Law Awards winners.

Genetos represents clients on single and multi-family housing, airports, industrial development, municipal gas utility, ports and 501(c)(3) bonds. He has served as counsel to the Indianapolis Airport Authority for the financing and construction of the Indianapolis Airport’s new Midfield Terminal and for the Airport, the City of Indianapolis and the State of Indiana for the United Airlines MOC-II facilities. Additionally, he has served the Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville Airport Authorities as bond counsel since 1985.

Genetos is a founding fellow and president of the American College of Bond Counsel, a highly selective honor reserved for an exclusive group of bond lawyers based on peer review and professional excellence. He is also a member of the Indiana, Indianapolis and American Bar Associations, as well as the Indiana Municipal Lawyers Association. He has held several leadership positions in the Indianapolis Bar Foundation, including president of the board of directors.

Genetos served as Ice Miller’s managing partner for nearly a decade and led the firm’s expansion to the Chicago market. Today, Genetos maintains residences in both Indiana and Illinois, in part to ensure the continued growth of the firm’s Chicago office. In Illinois, Genetos has served as bond counsel on several project financings for the state’s Housing Development Authority. He also provides counsel on numerous other economic, airport, housing and port development projects.

Ernst advises employers on all aspects of employment law and represents employers when complaints are filed against them. In particular, she advises employers on issues relating to managing their workforces, terminations, employee complaints, discrimination, leave and accommodation, employee classification, wage payment and more. She also assists employers in the drafting and implementation of employment policies.

In a litigation capacity, Ernst regularly represents employers in state and federal courts and before state and federal agencies such as the EEOC or NLRB. Ernst is also heavily involved in Ice Miller’s recruiting efforts and participates in pro bono initiatives.

Outside of the firm, Ernst has participated in several leadership programs, including Leadership Indianapolis and the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Children’s Bureau, Inc. + Families First, a nonprofit that provides supportive services to Indiana families, children and individuals.
