Many readers will recall the "Schoolhouse Rock!" classic, "Conjunction Junction." You may find yourself humming the tune at just the mention of the name of that episode, and you may also recall the gravelly voice of the train conductor helping us learn how to hook up words, phrases and clauses like train cars in the rail yard.

As it turns out, the conjunction "or" can actually get you pretty far in parsing out complex statutes and regulatory structures.

A confusing line of cases in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit — covering Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin — involving the Family and Medical Leave Act was recently clarified by the use of the "Schoolhouse Rock!" method.
