Selected Regulatory Developments for Governmental Plans

As many of our friends and clients will recall, our retired partner, Terry Mumford, would present an annual update of selected regulatory developments relevant to governmental retirement plans at certain conferences and publish an annual "Selected Regulatory Developments for Governmental Plans." We have heard from several clients that these regulatory updates were valued and served an important role in keeping our clients up-to-date on regulatory developments. As a result of this feedback, we have recommenced our publication of the "Selected Regulatory Developments for Governmental Plans." To catch-up on missed years, this e-alert contains the regulatory developments for 2016, 2017 and 2018. (As a result, information contained in 2016 or 2017 may not be current.) We hope these publications are valuable and appreciate your feedback. Going forward, the regulatory updates will be released on an annual basis.

For those unfamiliar with Ice Miller's regulatory updates, the purpose of the attached updates is to summarize selected regulatory developments that may be of interest to practitioners who work with governmental employers and governmental retirement and certain benefit plans. More specifically, the updates summarize guidance from the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of the Treasury, which could affect governmental employers and governmental retirement and certain benefit plans. The periods covered in these three regulatory updates are January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016, January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017, and January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2018. Each regulatory update also includes an Addendum I that deals with Department of Labor guidance, which may provide useful guidance to governmental plans.
