Dr. Charles Rexer’s practice focuses on patent counseling and prosecution in biotechnology and the life sciences. With experience handling biotechnology patents for industry and university clients, Charles has prosecuted patents to issue in the U.S. and has managed foreign patent portfolios pending in countries around the world.

With a Ph.D. in molecular microbiology, he has successfully represented clients on a variety of technologies including immunotherapies, CAR-T, small molecule therapies, plant breeding, transgenic plants and molecular biomarkers.

Prior to joining Ice Miller, Charles was a patent agent at the Global Patent Group, LLC and served as the primary practice contact for more than 15 life sciences clients. In addition to drafting and prosecuting patent applications, Charles has experience with patent post-grant proceedings, European patent oppositions and preparing and executing IP due diligence, both on investor-side and company-side transactions. Charles started his patent career as a patent scientist at Monsanto Company (now Bayer Crop Science), where he supported crop breeding technology innovations in agriculture.

After graduate school, Charles was a microbiologist at Theravance Biopharma, Inc. where he investigated novel anti-microbial compounds for treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The efforts resulted in the first marketed, semi-synthetic lipoglycopeptide (VIBATIV® - Televancin).

Charles is licensed to practice patent law exclusively before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and represents both foreign and domestic clients before the USPTO in the area of patent prosecution. Charles is not licensed to practice before state and federal court.
