Matt Diaz is an associate in Ice Miller’s Data Security and Privacy Practice Group.
Matt's practice focuses on data security, privacy, and telecommunications. He regularly helps clients comply with state, federal, and international data protection laws including data breach notification laws, federal privacy laws such as COPPA and HIPAA, and the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Matt has also assisted clients in managing data breaches and investigating cyber fraud. He writes and speaks regularly on topics related to emerging technologies, including smarts cities, autonomous vehicles and, loT.
Leveraging his experience working on telecommunications matters in Washington, D.C. and Ohio, Matt counsels clients on matters related to spectrum and broadband. He helps navigate clients through FCC compliance matters, as well as assists municipalities in managing right-of-way and broadband deployment issues.
Prior to joining Ice Miller, Matt was a policy specialist for Connect Ohio, a nonprofit organization focused on facilitating broadband access, adoption and use throughout the state of Ohio. In this role, Matt monitored broadband and privacy matters in the United States Congress, at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and in state legislatures across the country. He also assisted in advocacy efforts promoting broadband deployment in Ohio.
Matt also has experience working on telecommunications matters in Washington, D.C. He served as a legal intern at CTIA, a wireless communications trade association, where he assisted with regulatory filings before the FCC. He also served as a law clerk in the office of Chairman Tom Wheeler at the FCC.
During law school, Matt developed his legal skills through various externship programs. He was a judicial extern for U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton and served as a legislative extern in the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus.
Matt earned his juris doctor from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. While in law school, Matt served as the editor-in-chief of I/S – Ohio State’s Technology Law Journal. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and political science, cum laude, from the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa. While at USF, he served on the university’s board of trustees and was student body president.

  • Represented one of the leading investment groups in Ohio seeking to submit multiple applications to the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program. Licensure sought for medical marijuana cultivation, processing, and dispensaries. Also represent financial institutions seeking to comply with federal and state regulations regarding financial services to marijuana-related businesses.
