Michael (Mike) Mizell serves as Ice Miller’s Senior Strategic Advisor in the energy sector. In this role, Mike calls upon his experience and background across the energy industry to provide strategic business and policy guidance to the Firm's Energy and Utilities Law Group. The energy industry is facing a time of significant change in terms of both policy and business models. Mike's experience as a lawyer and business leader makes him well situated to aid clients as they address these new challenges and opportunities.

Mike has worked in the energy industry for more than 20 years as a private practice attorney, general counsel and senior business executive. Most recently, he served as the Vice President – Regulated Utilities Market Leader for AES US Services where his responsibilities included strategic business planning and execution for both Indianapolis Power & Light and Dayton Power & Light, which collectively serve approximately one million customers in Indiana and Ohio. He was also responsible for all regulatory, legislative and stakeholder management issues, and his direct reports included the president and CEO of each utility. During his tenure, Mike’s experience included:
  • Securing full regulatory approvals for over $2B of capital investments at or above budgeted returns
  • Overseeing development and execution of a strategic business plan for a $1B turnaround of a financially challenged public utility
  • Developing and executing a business strategy designed to transition over 50% (~700MW) of a utility’s assets from coal to natural gas at attractive returns
  • Successfully developing and placing into service the first utility scale Battery Energy Storage array in the MISO market 
Prior to serving as vice president, Mike served as United States General Counsel for AES US Services. He was responsible for all legal business matters relating to the U.S. business unit, which included a workforce of 3,600 people in 13 States and maintained and operated two regulated utilities and 19 generation businesses constituting 14GW of generating capacity (including coal and natural gas power stations, wind farms, solar farms and energy storage arrays). Mike’s experience in this position included the successful litigation of several complex, multi-party regulatory proceedings representing over $500M of regulatory outcomes.
