Ryan Hiler is an associate and registered patent attorney in Ice Miller’s Intellectual Property Group. Ryan designs strategies for clients’ intellectual property portfolios based on their goals and market expectations, and his practice focuses on patent procurement and technology transactions.
Ryan routinely assists clients with drafting and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications as well as preparing patent appeals before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He has extensive experience conducting intellectual property due diligence investigations and drafting opinions for freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity, patentability and exclusivity.   
In addition, Ryan frequently negotiates and structures strategic intellectual property transactions and drafts contracts. He represents clients in a variety of domestic and international technology transactions involving intellectual property or product rights, including intellectual property licenses, collaboration agreements, research and development agreements, manufacturing agreements, supply and distribution agreements, university licenses, mergers and acquisitions and the formation of joint ventures and other types of strategic alliances and partnering arrangements.
Ryan counsels clients in a wide variety of fields, a small sampling of which includes the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, animal health, agriculture, diagnostic and medical device fields. Ryan represents clients ranging from entrepreneurial start-ups and universities to Fortune 100 corporations.
Ryan received his juris doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame Law School. He received a Master of Science in biology, with focuses in molecular biology, biotechnology and biological chemistry, from Purdue University. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in nutrition science, with minors in chemistry and biology, from Indiana University.
Passionate about his local community, Ryan is a board member of Health & Science Innovations and is active in Momentum Mentor Networks, Indiana Health Industry Forum.  
Ryan is admitted to practice law in the state of Indiana and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana.
Outside of the office, Ryan enjoys being with family and friends, traveling, watching sports and movies, exercising and spending time with his wife, Sheila; their daughter, Isabel; their son, Jackson; and their dog, Hoosier.
