Sterling W. Shown is an associate focusing her practice on tax-exempt organizations and charitable giving.
 
Sterling advises tax-exempt organizations with respect to corporate governance and federal tax matters. She assists organizations with entity formation, applying for and maintaining tax exemption and developing board governance policies consistent with best practices in the industry. She also counsels nonprofit entities regarding unrelated business income (UBI), restructuring, grantmaking and various other corporate and tax-exempt compliance issues. In addition to her work with tax-exempt organizations, Sterling advises clients on charitable giving using charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, charitable gift annuities and donor-advised funds. Sterling also works with our Social Impact Team to serve diverse clients who sit at the intersection of private equity, investment and philanthropy, by advising these clients on corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts and social impact investing.  


 
A proud native of Owensboro, Ky., she received her Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in political science from the University of Kentucky in 2014. She then attended Washington University School of Law where she earned her juris doctor in 2017. While there, she served as Chief Primary Editor of the Journal of Law and Policy and co-chair of the Women’s Law Caucus Public Interest Auction.
 
Prior to joining Ice Miller, Sterling clerked for the Firm as a summer associate in 2016. Sterling is admitted to practice law in Indiana.
