September is National Preparedness Month, a time when businesses and communities revisit their emergency plans—at work and at home. We often think about tornadoes, floods, active shooters or supply chain disruptions. But increasingly, the most disruptive events are digital. Cyber incidents have become the new disaster scenario, and for Hoosier businesses, the stakes are rising.

Nation-state cyber activity continues to escalate, targeting not just federal agencies or Fortune 500 companies but also small to midsize organizations that form the backbone of Indiana’s economy. Meanwhile, inflation, higher operating costs and talent shortages are forcing many organizations to trim security budgets. That paradox—more threats but fewer defenses—makes businesses an especially attractive target.
