Key Insights from the Miami Private Markets Conference: Unlocking Opportunities in a Changing Landscape

December 30, 2024

Lawyers from our Miami office attended the Annual Private Markets Conference at the end of November, an event that brings together institutional allocators and family offices to explore the evolving dynamics of the private equity, venture capital, secondaries, private credit, and real estate industries. The conference highlighted the key trends and challenges shaping private markets today, offering valuable insights for both investors and companies.

Alternative Investment Opportunities

Many speakers focused their discussion on alternative investment opportunities, noting battery technology, private equity secondaries, lending to non-sponsor borrowers, cannabis, bitcoin mining, and energy storage, particularly data centers powering artificial intelligence, as areas with substantial growth potential. Additionally, speakers noted a noticeable shift toward alternative private credit strategies, particularly those offering greater liquidity options, a trend they believe is expected to gain momentum following the recent elections.

Innovative Investment Vehicles

Investors are the interested in the new and innovative investment vehicles available to them, including 1099 vehicles, evergreen, and liquid funds. Such investment structures are designed to adapt to today’s market needs, making investments more accessible.

Venture Capital and Growth Investments

The conference also addressed the shifting dynamics in venture capital and growth. Since 2021, the market has seen a significant normalization of valuations, accompanied by reduced activity in Series C funding due to uncertain exit pathways. While this poses challenges, it also creates new opportunities in early-stage growth and specialized funds. In addition, though a challenge for companies and existing shareholders, the increase in down rounds provides attractive entry points for investors.

Environmental, Social, and Governance

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations appear to be top of mind for both investors and companies. Demand for ESG-focused investments remains strong, especially in renewable energy and environmental sectors. However, while many limited partners are requiring ESG reporting, activity in the U.S. market has moderated and environmental impact continues to outpace social and governance factors in importance for investors.

Artificial Intelligence in Private Markets

The transformative role of artificial intelligence in private markets is a key topic. AI is fundamentally reshaping business models and creating new investment opportunities, particularly in data infrastructure and AI-driven ventures. Institutional investors are increasingly drawn to these sectors, recognizing their potential to drive significant returns.

In summary, despite ongoing market shifts, private credit continues to play a critical role in private markets, offering a reliable source of risk-adjusted returns. While volatility persists, innovative approaches are helping investors and businesses navigate these challenges while capitalizing on emerging opportunities.

Our Miami team is excited to bring their proficiency to the table. Whether your focus is on private equity, alternative investment structures, energy-focused ventures, or navigating volatile markets, we are here to help. We look forward to working with you to capitalize on these opportunities and drive success in an ever-changing market.
