U.S. Citizens Will Need Authorization to Enter the UK In 2025

December 17, 2024

The UK government is implementing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system to regulate and facilitate the entry of millions of visa-exempt travelers annually, including approximately six million individuals from the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Effective January 8, 2025, U.S. nationals will be required to obtain an ETA prior to entering the United Kingdom. This mandatory pre-authorization applies to certain visa-exempt travelers, such as those from the U.S., Canada, and other designated countries, intending to visit the UK for a maximum duration of six months for purposes including tourism, business, or short-term academic study. This initiative reflects the UK’s strategic objective to enhance border security while optimizing the efficiency of entry procedures.

Application Process

Applications for an ETA in the United Kingdom can be submitted through the UK ETA mobile app or an online portal opened on November 27, 2024. The most convenient way to apply is via the “UK ETA app.” Travelers without access to a smartphone can search for “Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation to come to the UK” on GOV.UK to complete their application. The application fee is £10 (approximately $13), and most applications are processed and approved within three working days with approval notifications sent via email.

Validity of the ETA

Once approved, an ETA remains valid for two years or until the expiration of the applicant’s passport, whichever occurs first. Within this period, travelers are permitted multiple entries into the United Kingdom without the need for reapplication, provided they utilize the same passport that was used for the initial authorization.

Requirements for the Application

To apply for an ETA, applicants must provide:

  • Personal details (e.g., name, address, and contact information);
  • Passport information (must use a valid biometric passport that will be used for travel, not a photocopy or digital version);
  • A recent digital passport photo that meets UK Government standards for digital photos;
  • Payment information (credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay).

Applicants using the mobile app will need to ensure their device is compatible. The app allows users to take or upload photographs of their valid biometric passport and face. Additionally, applicants must also answer questions about their address, job, criminal history, and other nationalities held (if applicable).

Additional Notes

  • If an ETA application is refused, the individual will need to apply for a visa at a UK embassy or consulate to seek permission to enter the UK;
  • Travelers must use the same passport for travel as the one used for their ETA application. Failure to do so may result in denied boarding or entry;
  • It is essential to apply well in advance of travel dates to avoid disruptions. Airlines may deny boarding without an approved ETA and entry into the UK could also be refused.

While the scope of this article is limited to a detailed discussion of UK's ETA travel requirements, beginning in 2025, U.S. citizens (and travelers from over 60 countries) intending to visit Schengen Zone countries in continental Europe will be required to apply for similar permission in advance of travel using ETIAS (the new European Travel Information and Authorization System). For more information about these requirements, processing times and related information, please visit https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en, or contact one of the attorneys from Ice Miller's Immigration Team.

The introduction of ETA and similar systems like ETIAS reflects a global trend toward digitized pre-travel authorizations, enhancing both security and convenience for travelers and governments alike.
