Ice Miller Partner Myra Selby Named as a 2022 Margaret Brent Award Honoree

Ice Miller congratulates partner Myra Selby on being named a recipient of the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers Achievement Award. As a 2022 honoree, Selby will be recognized at the Margaret Brent Awards Ceremony on August 7 as part of the American Bar Association (ABA) Annual Meeting.

Named after Margaret Brent, the first women lawyer in America, this prestigious award is presented annually to five outstanding women lawyers who have achieved professional excellence and paved the way for other women in the legal profession. Established by the ABA’s Commission on Women in the Profession in 1991, the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of women lawyers who have excelled in their field.

As a partner in Ice Miller’s Indianapolis office, Selby maintains a broad-based practice focusing on corporate investigations, appellate practice, corporate compliance, complex litigation, dispute resolution, risk management and strategic advice across a variety of industries, with a particular emphasis on the health care industry. She joined Ice Miller in 1983 and in 1988, she became Ice Miller’s first African-American partner.

Selby is heavily involved in the ABA, having served the organization in many positions, including as council member, budget officer and Chair of the Section of Dispute Resolution, vice chair of the Business and Transactions Interest Group of the Health Law Section and a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Diversity in the Profession.

Selby previously served as Health Policy Director for the State of Indiana, a role she was appointed to by Governor Evan Bayh in 1993. Her responsibilities included policy development and the execution of state health care programs, including Medicaid managed care. Governor Bayh then appointed her as an Associate Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court, where she was both the first woman and the first African-American to serve on the court.

At Ice Miller, Selby has served as Partner-in-Charge of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee and as Chair of its Personnel Committee, among many other roles. As the firm’s first Partner-in-Charge of Diversity and Inclusion, Selby is directly involved in many of Ice Miller’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

In addition to being named a Margaret Brent honoree, Selby has been recognized with other awards and recognitions, including being named a “Sagamore of the Wabash” by Governor Frank O’Bannon, the Torchbearer Award – Trailblazer from the Indiana Commission for Women, “A Breakthrough Woman” Award from the Coalition of 100 Black Women, the Antoinette Dakin Leach Award from the Indianapolis Bar Association Women in the Law Section and an Excellence in Leadership award from Executive Women in Health Care.
