Criminals might encrypt data or operational systems in hopes of collecting a ransom. Others might enter a network simply to destroy it. Still others might remain hidden for months, quietly gathering information that can be sold to a business competitor or passed to a foreign government.

A manufacturer doesn’t have to be large, prominent or near a major city to become a target. They just have to be vulnerable. Which is still common for many small and medium-size operations.

“Unfortunately, it is not difficult to attack systems, because a lot of companies don’t put enough emphasis on the cybersecurity basics,” Romero said.

The price of protection varies according to the size and complexity of the organization. But Siddharth “Sid” Bose, an Ice Miller partner and chair of the firm’s Data Security and Privacy Practice, said smaller manufacturers should not assume cybersecurity requires a Fortune 500-size investment.

“You can get a long way by doing some of the more foundational things that would save you from a lot of headache and heartburn,” Bose said.
